What to Put on a Dog Tag
A dog tag is small, so every character counts. Here's exactly what to put on a dog tag, what to leave off, and how to lay it out so the person who finds your dog can reach you in seconds.
What to put on a dog tag: the essentials
1. Your phone number
This is the single most important line. Use a mobile number you always answer. If there's room, add a second number from a partner or family member.
2. Your dog's name
A name helps a finder calm your dog and shows the dog has a home. Some owners leave the name off to avoid strangers using it. That's a personal choice, but most owners include it.
3. A short prompt
A few words like "Call my human" or "I'm lost" tell the finder what to do. Keep it to one short line.
Useful extras if you have space
- Medical needs: "Needs meds" or "Diabetic" can speed up a return.
- Microchipped: tells the finder a vet or shelter can scan your dog.
- Town or area: helps if your phone is off, without giving your full street address.
What to leave off a dog tag
- Your full home address: a phone number is faster and keeps your address private.
- Long sentences: on a 1-inch tag, long text becomes too small to read.
- Old numbers: update your tag every time your phone number changes.
How to fit it all on a small tag
Our dog tags are 1 inch round and printed in full color on both sides. That gives you twice the space of a one-sided engraved tag. A layout that works well:
- Front: your dog's name plus the design you love
- Back: phone number plus one short line, like "Call my human"
Keep names under about 10 characters and use just one phone number on the back for the best readability.
Dog tag FAQ
Is it a legal requirement to have a dog tag?
Rules vary by state and city. Many US areas require a rabies or license tag, and it's always smart to add an ID tag with your phone number. Check your local regulations.
Do I still need a tag if my dog is microchipped?
Yes. A microchip can only be read with a scanner. A visible ID tag lets anyone call you straight away.
Should I put my dog's name on the tag?
Most owners do, because it helps a finder connect with the dog. If you prefer not to, use "Call my human" and your number instead.
How often should I replace a dog tag?
Replace it when the text gets hard to read or your contact details change. Our printed tags are fade-resistant, but check them every few months.
